End of Year Book Ideas for Preschool

When it comes to the end of the year, it may be hard for preschoolers to say goodbye to classmates, teachers and the environment they've grown to know and love. It's important to explain through lessons, books and activities that preschool must end and kindergarten must begin. Preschoolers can be taught that life must go on and life will continually change.
  1. The Night Before Kindergarten

    • "The Night Before Kindergarten" by Natasha Wing is a book for preschoolers which narrates the exciting events of a first day of kindergarten. Children in preschool may feel sad about leaving their friends behind. "The Night Before Kindergarten" may help to make saying goodbye to preschool easier and may provide some insight on kindergarten. Children in the book pack their school supplies, pose for pictures and say goodbye to mom and dad. The book is intended for children ages three to five, however, this would be an ideal book to read to preschoolers leaving preschool or about to enter kindergarten.

    Biscuit's Graduation Day

    • "Biscuit's Graduation Day" by Alyssa Satin Capucilli is a story for children ages four to eight that may help preschool students or kindergarten students get past the anxiety and sadness that comes along with moving on to a higher grade. "Biscuit's Graduation Day" encourages students to reflect on the good times that happened throughout the year.

    Happy Graduation

    • "Happy Graduation!" by Margaret McNamara is a book for children ages four to six that narrates the story of Michael and his dog, Cookie, getting ready for Michael's graduation. "Happy Graduation!" tells the story of children reflecting on the things they've learned throughout the year. In the book, Michael and Cookie help Michael's classmates prepare for graduation and then celebrate the big day.

    Last Day Blues

    • "Last Day Blues" by Julie Danneberg is an end-of-year book that can help students to cheer up and accept changes that will inevitably occur. As children approach the last few days of school, they may become scared and express feelings of missing their teachers, friends and classroom as they move on to kindergarten. "Last Day Blues" addresses the issues that children face and help comfort them in their struggles to accept change.
