Help the children to establish a routine. When teaching a full-day kindergarten class, it's likely that your students will become restless or even grumpy for the first few weeks. This is likely the first time that your students have been subjected to an entire day's worth of school. Give the kids a variety of breaks to play outside or color. You will also want to give them a 20- to 30-minute nap time.
Social skills are very important for children to develop at a young age. The sooner that children are able to socialize, the more likely that they are able to commuunicate adequately with both adults and other children. Put the kids in activities in which they are required to work together. Encourage all kids to participate in songs. Establish a show-and-tell so that kids can bring objects from home to talk to the class about. These items can spur communication and interests between the students.
Spend time teaching your full-day class about rules. Establish and uphold general classroom rules. Put a star beside the kids' names when they have gone a full day without getting their names on the board for acting out. Teach the kids about general rules, such as looking before you cross the road and obeying traffic lights as a pedestrian.
As your kids will be with you through several seasons, teach your kids about weather and appropriate dress. Discuss what clothing the kids should pick out during cold weather times versus warm weather periods. Also discuss clothing, such as scarves, that can be worn in multiple seasons like winter and spring.
It's important to begin to teach your students about the alphabet and writing basics. It's also important to read to young children as they enjoy stories and learn about proper sentence formation and speaking practices by observing you. When reading aloud to students, enunciate so that all students can clearly hear you and pick up words appropriately.
