Instead of the traditional cap and gown, have the children dress up in a simple costume that is representative of what they want to be when they grow up. Although they can still wear a nice graduation outfit, have them add a simple piece of themed clothing or accessory. For example, if a child wants to be a doctor, he could wear a stethoscope around his neck; if he wants to be a cowboy, he could wear boots and a cowboy hat. Have the person who is handing out the diplomas announce the costume: "John Smith is planning to be a cowboy when he grows up."
At many kindergarten graduations, the children will sing a song. Prior to the graduation, teach the children a song that has to do with growing up or the future. At some point during the ceremony, have the children sing the song as a group. After the song, hand out the diplomas individually and ask the children clap and cheer for each other. This is also a good photo opportunity for the parents.
Set up the graduation area so that the children can walk down an aisle while "Pomp and Circumstance" is played. Place the diplomas on a table decorated by the children and hand them out with a flower or some type of simple gift that the children will enjoy. Plan a surprise at the end of the ceremony, like a balloon or confetti drop.
Children love awards and to be rewarded because it makes them feel special. In addition to handing out diplomas, consider granting an award to each child for something she's good at, such as perfect attendance, best reader, good manners, hard worker or best drawer. This action will promote confidence, good behavior and memories for years to come.
