Kindergarten lessons about farms should include the study of tractors. Songs such as "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" may be used. It teaches children about the different sounds animals make, and you may include a tractor making a "vroom vroom" sound. The children may also paint farm scenes with tractors or play with model toy tractors, play animals and a barn. Children should learn about all the different jobs, types of animals and crops found on farms. Also, relate the crops on the farm to lessons about nutrition.
A tractor may be used to teach children about the alphabet and reading. A tractor craft constructed out of construction paper will teach children that tractors are spelled with the letter "T." Cut out a large red or green "T," and cut out two large black wheels. Turn the "T" on its side and glue on the tires to make the tractor. Worksheets with tractors and the letter "T" may be included in literacy lessons, and books about tractors may be read to the children.
Lessons about different modes of transportation should include lessons about tractors. Begin lessons with different types of vehicles, such as cars, buses, trains and tractors. Ask the children why vehicles are necessary and what people did before vehicles such as cars. Children will examine toy vehicles and point out the parts, such as tires, wings, steering wheels, doors and other parts. A field trip to a farm would allow the children a close-up view of a working tractor.
Tractors should be a part of a kindergarten outdoor play area. Pedal toy tractors may be used or small battery-powered tractors can be ridden on smooth-surfaced recess areas. Old tractor tires may be repurposed into sand boxes and tire swings. Tires should be cleaned and filled with playground sand for a sandbox. For a tire swing, drill holes into the tires and attach chains or ropes with bolts. Secure to a large tree or steel structure to use.
