Ideas to Make Functional Learning Games

Games are important teaching tools. The main purpose for any game for children is to develop and refine skills in a situation that is fun. Some games need props and others just need players. Keep in mind the child's developmental needs to insure intellectual, physical, social and even emotional growth. These simple kindergarten games can be made from household objects and provide hours of entertainment, as well as education.
  1. Color Dominoes

    • Take index cards and draw a line across the middle of each card. Take construction paper (red, orange, blue, yellow, green and purple) and glue a piece on each side, using all color combinations. Cover with clear adhesive paper for longevity. To play, turn all cards color side down. Have each player choose seven cards and put the remaining in the center. Begin by placing one card in the center. Each player takes turns adding a card that matches in color to either end of the cards in the center. If a player cannot match either end, he must continue to draw cards from the center pile until he can put one down.

    Making Scrambled Eggs

    • Take a strip of cardboard and write three consecutive letters or numbers. Laminate the strips for durability. Cut between the digits in a zigzag puzzle style. Place the three pieces into plastic Easter eggs. Store the eggs in an egg carton. Place the egg carton and a frying pan on the table. A child can pretend to crack the egg and arrange the pieces in consecutive order inside the pan. When finished, place the pieces back into the egg and into the carton for future play. This game can be played alone or with a group.

    Phone Number Bingo

    • Write a child's phone number on a square of poster board and the child's name on the back. Prepare a set of calling cards with numerals from zero to nine. To play, the caller picks and calls a number. Players who have that number on their card place a marker on top. When the player has a marker on all the numerals in the phone number, she calls out, "RING." Continue playing until all the "phones" have rung. Flip the cards over and use alphabet calling cards to play Name Bingo.

    Match the Hearts

    • Take a deck of playing cards and pull out all the hearts. Cut each in half using a puzzle-style cut. Place these cards on the table and encourage children to match the halves of each card, according to number and suit. Start with the hearts, as children recognize this symbol, and then continue this game using spades, diamonds and clubs.

    Holiday Tic-Tac-Toe

    • Provide the children with a holiday designed paper plate. Use a black marker to draw the grid on the plate. Use holiday candy (two different kinds) as the markers of X and O. Invite the children to play the game and then eat the candy as a snack when the game is over.
