Your kindergartner will spend much of her school year writing out the alphabet and printing out words and sentences. For this she needs Number 2 pencils. A pack of 10 pencils should keep your child supplied for the year. Since she is just learning to write, she will make many mistakes, so also supply her with at least one large eraser. Don't forget to give her at least one pack of loose leaf paper for all her writing exercises.
Kindergartners create a lot of art in school. Send your child to school with a 24 pack of crayons, washable markers your child can easily grasp and a watercolor kit. Since painting often gets messy, give her a paint shirt to protect her colors from getting paint on them. She will also need a good pair of child-safe scissors. Not only will she use these for craft projects but also to practice motor skills. Buy her at least two bottles of washable glue.
Many schools either require or request parents donate some basic classroom supplies the whole class can use. This usually includes: a box or two of tissues for runny noses; hand sanitizers and wet wipes for dirty hands; and paper towels to clean up messes. Some schools also ask for paper plates, napkins and liquid soap.
Help your child stay organized at school by buying her a school box to keep pencils, marker, crayons, scissors and glue in. Keep her writing exercises, artwork and crafts together using pocket folders or a three-ring binder. To make sure she has a way to transport her books, homework and supplies to and from school, give her a book bag or backpack.
Young kids often have accidents and get dirty so you may also want to send your child to school with a change of clothes stored in a zip lock bag. In the spring and fall, your child may wear sandals to school and boots in the winter. On these days make sure she brings a pair of athletic shoes with her for gym class. Some school also require you to supply your child with a plastic mat for nap time.
