The Supply List for Kindergarten Students

When your child is ready to go to kindergarten, it can be an exciting transition into the "world of big kids." If this is your first time being a kindergarten parent, you'll want to know as much about his kindergarten future as possible. That's why it's important to read and understand the school supply list his school provides. The supply list is more than a paper with needed supplies information, it's a glimpse of his upcoming scholastic future.
  1. Sanitary Supplies

    • When you see listed items such as paper towels, Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer and hand soap it's an indication that your child will be expected to keep herself and her area clean. By having this knowledge in advance, you can start instructing your child on how to practice tidiness before the school year begins. Also, the supply list may only request that you supply one or two of each item, but you would be wise to supply more.

    Homework Supplies

    • A supply list that names a full size book bag, 3-prong plastic pocket folders and primary composition books is telling of a school curriculum that requires homework. If you attended kindergarten at a time when classes were half-day sessions that primarily consisted of coloring, napping and learning how to write in print, you'll be surprised to know that kindergartners are currently expected to complete a homework assignment each school night. To help prepare your child for future study sessions, start encouraging him to spend at least 25 minutes on completing learning work sheets in a quiet setting.

    Art Supplies

    • Bottles of school glue, one box of washable markers, 16-count crayons, 12-count colored pencils and four large glue sticks are more than just art supplies -- they're the must-haves for your child's creative endeavors. Artwork in kindergarten is surprisingly intricate. Your child will bring home translucent butterflies, 17-by-22 painted interpretations of her home life and more. You can stimulate her artistic side early by taking her to visit museums and local art galleries before the school year begins.

    Classroom Treats

    • Kindergarten teachers include a note on the supply list that informs parents of encouragement supplies that they use throughout the year. These are palm-size toys, stickers, healthy snacks and coloring books. After you send in these items at the beginning of the year, remember to be proactive and regularly provide extras throughout the semesters. These encouragement treats will be highly sought after by both your child and his classmates.
