Children will learn to identify capital and lower case letters, and the sounds the letters make, demonstrating phonemic awareness by hearing and orally manipulating letter sounds. A child will gain an understanding for the relationship between the letter she visually sees, and the sound that the letter makes.
Students will identify new words by viewing pictures, and read one letter words, such as A or I, and often heard words by sight.
Students will identify, and make rhymes. Students will identify punctuation, such as question and exclamation marks. Kindergartners will also separate individual letters from words, by observing spaces; and learn to recite back information that has been read aloud.
Students will learn to count to 20, identify all numbers, state the numbers' names and write the numbers down. Students should be able to compare values and place numbers 1 to 20 in the correct numerical order with the help of counter objects. Students will be able to represent numbers using objects. Children will also learn to identify portions whole, and half using concrete objects, identify pennies, and dimes and values, as well as count forward, and backward from any number 1 to 20 with the aid of a number line.
In kindergarten, a child will learn to ask questions about her surroundings and explore the way things work. She will learn to observe, and explain her observations orally or pictorially. She will learn to identify, and classify objects based on characteristics, able to sort things together by likenesses. A kindergartner will compare liquids and solids. She will observe the structures, and parts of living things, the environments for living and identify that the creatures can only live in the environments which fit needs. The class will observe the sun, moon, stars and weather patterns, learning to understand the role each play in sustaining life.
A kindergartner will learn to write his own name, writing most letters correctly. He will capitalize first letters, leave spaces between words, and write left to right. Students will communicate with complete thought, explaining his thoughts, feelings or experiences with letters, pictures and words, as well as learn to identify the difference between nouns and verbs, and understand that a noun, and verb is required to form a complete sentence.
