How to Do Four Square for School

Playing four square in school is a common game during physical education. There are fairly standard rules, although they can be customized, and the rules are simple enough that small children can play. The materials for the court can be temporary or permenant, and the only things you need to actually play are players and a ball. Some adults have taken this game beyond the school yard and have tournaments that turn much more competitive.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area of the court. Four square can be played either indoors or out, so make sure that there is plenty of space for children to line up. Generally, the size is a 16-foot-by-16-foot court divided into four 8-inch squares.

    • 2

Divide the area into four equally measured squares by measuring out one large square with the measuring tape, and taping the area to mark the boundaries. Number each square by putting one of the number stickers onto the court, one for each square.

    • 3

Press the tape to the concrete, court or carpet so that there is no chance of a shoe scuffing the tape. If you want a permanent court, paint the lines, using the lines of the painter's tape as a guideline. Paint over the numbers and peel off the sticker for permanent number stencils.

    • 4

Play the game by putting four people onto the court, with one in each square. The server bounces the ball into one of the other squares. The ball must be bounced underhand, and hit down. Whoever is standing in the square that the ball is bounced into must serve the ball into another square of his or her choice. If they miss the ball, then they are out, and all players move up a numbered spot. A new player steps into the vacated square. Play until there is only one person on the court.
