How to Introduce a Song to Kindergarteners

Encourage your kindergarten students to develop an early love for music by filling your classroom with fun melodies and energetic beats that get them excited to take on the day. Feature music that teaches them something about school subjects or life in general. Singing songs about the alphabet and animals can make it more fun for children to remember their ABCs and animal names. Introduce one song at a time and see how the kids respond.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the song ahead of time and practice singing it at home so you know all the words. Kindergartners like short fun music about subjects on their level such as farm animals, basic math or other simple songs.

    • 2

Gather the children together and sit down on a mat or outside on the grass.

    • 3

Sit down so you are on the same level as the children. Begin singing the song as you play a guitar or sing without a guitar, if you don't have one. Encourage the kids to clap their hands and sing along. They might need to hear you sing the entire song first before they begin participating. Get excited about the melodies and ask them to sing along.

    • 4

Ask the kids to clap their hands and see if any of the children want to try playing the guitar.

    • 5

Don't push shy kids to sing. Sometimes you need to sing the song several times with all the kids before every child in the class participates.
