How to Teach Math to Kindergarteners

Teaching math to kindergarten students requires multiple activities. Using manipulatives, books and physical activities will teach all types of learners--visual, kinesthetic, auditory and tactile. Any math lesson can be created using the same basic foundation. With a little bit of creativity you can adjust the materials and activities to each math lesson.

Instructions

    • 1
Using manipulatives helps both tactile and visual learners.

Introduce manipulatives for the lesson you want to teach. Manipulatives are concrete objects, such as an abacus, counters, geoboards, blocks, and beads--anything that can be used to represent abstract concepts. Allow your students to play with the manipulatives for at least one week before teaching your lesson.

    • 2
Using a picture book will help both auditory and visual learners.

Introduce the math concept you want to teach with a picture book. Check out the Children's Picture Books website for picture book suggestions for several different math lessons.

    • 3

Distribute the manipulatives that you already introduced. Allow the students to work with their manipulatives independently and as a group to build their understanding of the concept that was taught.

    • 4
Activities that get your students moving target kinesthetic learners.

Provide an activity that gets your students moving. For example, when teaching shapes students can go on a scavenger hunt to find shapes around the room.
