How to Teach 3rd-Grade Math to Students With Dysgraphia

Third grade is a time when math studies take off and students start learning more about complex math. Students learn about fractions, decimals, estimations and long addition and subtraction throughout the third grade. For students with dysgraphia, which is a writing learning disability, math can become frustrating. Not only is it hard for these students to write the equations, fractions and numbers, but they can become so absorbed in focusing on the writing that they aren't able to pay attention to the lesson, according to the National Center for Learning Disabilities.

Instructions

    • 1

Provide students with large graph paper on which to write. The graph paper is chunked into large squares, making it easier for the students to get the spacing for the formulas and equations correct. It also helps with organization of information and is large enough to allow comfortable writing.

    • 2

Give the students several pencils and pens and have them try writing. Comfort in writing numbers is often difficult for students with dysgraphia, according to the Education website. Providing several pencils and allowing the students to work with the most comfortable pencil or pen will help with writing and allow less distraction.

    • 3

Give the students several worksheets. While the students often will understand the math when spoken aloud, they often have trouble writing the math equations and figuring out the math in written form. The more practice they have, the more success students with dysgraphia will experience.

    • 4

Allow students extra time to complete assignments and tests. The students are often intelligent, but they take longer to write the answers to the tests or the problem on paper. Allow the extra time by starting the students early.

    • 5

Avoid grading neatness on timed math assignments. Timed assignments, such as two-minute multiplication worksheets or adding and subtracting tests, will not be neat. Grade on the answers only when it deals with timed tests.
