How to Teach English With Technology

Technology is a central component in a modern learning environment. Technology can also be a great tool for reaching various audiences and making lesson plans exciting and surprising for students. Technology needs to be wisely integrated and controlled in the classroom to create the most effective lesson plans. The teacher must remain the central focus with technology used only as an aid and supplement to the larger goals of the classroom.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a classroom website. Teachers can create their own website to illustrate their teaching philosophy, their education and the projects they want to pursue with their students. The website can also contain a page dedicated to English students with the syllabus, practice questions, extra English readings and any electronic resources that will help them when studying at home.

Incorporate a segment of class for instruction on web research. Show how to find reputable sources, which will bolster essays and literature reviews. Discuss appropriate English citation styles and how to avoid plagiarism while working with Internet sources.

    • 3

Create a threaded discussion for students to utilize as homework. A discussion board is an ideal way to get students to discuss what they are reading or learning in English class outside of the classroom. Serve as mediator by asking a question to start the discussion. Require students to contribute at least two or three comments in the discussion each week on what they are reading or learning.

Utilize slideshows and presentations for a multimedia lesson plan. If the English class is reading "The Scarlet Letter," show illustrations from periodicals of the time period, quotes from reviews of the book and other historic artifacts to boost interest in the material.
