How to Introduce a Nickel to Kindergartners

Learning to count money can be a difficult concept for young children, so introducing money to pupils when they're in kindergarten is a way to scaffold the learning process about money. When introducing coins, bring them out one per day or week, depending on the ability of the children.

Instructions

    • 1

Tell pupils the coin they're going to focus on is called a nickel.

    • 2

Show students the front and back of the coin. Talk about how a nickel looks on the front and back. Online Schools states "preschool and kindergarten students learn how to identify coins by color, texture, size, and value."

    • 3

Tell pupils how much a nickel is worth. After telling them that a nickel is worth 5 cents, if they are already familiar with a penny, tell them instead of having 5 pennies, someone could have one nickel because both ways equal 5 cents.

    • 4

Give students an activity using nickels. Possible activities may be identifying nickels, sorting nickels or making patterns with nickels using the front and back of the coins. Kelly's Kindergarten.com has a money-sorting activity using wallets. The objective is for students to sort nickels, pennies, dimes and quarters into four different wallets.
