How to Teach About Textures to Kindergarteners

Instructions

  1. Texture Guessing Game

    • 1

Play a guessing game with students by placing items with different textures into several paper bags. Give students a chance to feel the items in the bags and have them describe and guess the item.

    • 2

Show the items to the students and discuss the different textures.

    • 3

Ask the students to think about different textures around the classroom. Give them 1 to 2 minutes to think, and then call on them one at a time to stand up and point to the item in the classroom.

    Creating Art with Textures

    • 4

Place a plastic bin with different pieces of textured fabric scraps on each table in the classroom. Explain to the students that they are going to create a collage.

    • 5

Provide each student with a piece of construction paper and a glue stick. Explain they need to find pieces of fabric with at least five different textures and glue them to the paper.

    • 6

Ask the students to share their collages with the rest of the class and have them point out the different textures. Display the collages around the classroom.
