Kindergarten Lessons on Apples

Apples are a common kindergarten theme that many teachers choose to study in late September or early October. In many parts of the U.S. apples are in season at this time and Johnny Appleseed's birthday is celebrated on September 26. If you choose to use an apple theme in your kindergarten classroom, you can integrate it into every subject area you teach.
  1. Language Arts

    • Language arts lessons about apples can take many different forms. You can read books about apples or Johnny Appleseed including "The Apple Pie Tree" and "Ten Apples Up on Top." As you read these books aloud to your class, highlight important vocabulary, such as the words apple, tree, seeds and plant. Put these words on your word wall, or post them somewhere in your classroom and encourage students to look for these words in other places and use them when they write.

    Math

    • Many kindergarten math lessons can include apples. Ask each student to bring in his favorite type of apple. They can sort the apples by color, and create a classroom graph showing how many students brought apples of a particular color. Note which color of apple was the most and least popular. You may want to present students with a coloring page of an apple tree, and instruct them to draw a specific number of red, yellow and green apples on their tree and then ask how many total apples they drew.

    Science

    • As part of helping students to understand nature, talk about how apples grow from seeds into apple trees. Show students pictures of an apple tree during different seasons of the year, and ask them to compare and contrast the trees during different seasons. After instructing students to predict how many seeds are in an apple, cut an apple width-wise across the center, instead of from top to bottom, and count the seeds together.

    Other Subject Areas

    • During art time, let students use cut apples and finger paints for printmaking. Give each student a picture of an empty apple tree, and ask him to use his thumbprint to add apples to the trees. You can make applesauce together as a class by putting sliced apples in a crockpot with water and letting it simmer all day. Give children a turn mashing the cooked apples with a potato masher, and then let everyone taste the applesauce.
