Draw the 12 numbers on a paper plate to represent the numbers on an analog clock. Set this example at the front of the class as a model for each child to make. Help kindergarten students draw the numbers on plates, explaining that the numbers are always located in the same place on every analog clock.
Draw small numbers, one through 60 on the very outer edge of the plate, to represent the minutes and seconds. Do this for the children or use a clock template instead of a paper plate if you are short on time. Explain to them that typically, analog clocks do not include these numbers; show them a real clock as an example. Once they learn to read the clock, erase these numbers.
Hand out precut hour, minute and second hands to each child. Make the hour hand the shortest and the second hand the longest. The size of the minute hand falls between the hour and second hands. Have children hold up a second hand as you explain that it moves fastest on the clock. Then have them hold up the minute hand as you explain that it points to the minutes and moves slower than the second hand. Finally, have them hold up an hour hand as you explain that it moves slowest and points to the hour.
Help each child attach the hands to the center of a paper plate clock with a brad. Tell them they can practice moving the hands slowly around the plate. Ask them to place the hour hand on certain numbers and the minute and second hands on others. Use your own clock as a model for them to follow.
Explain that every time the second hand moves quickly around the entire clock, the minute hand moves to the next small number. Then explain that every time the minute hand moves one time around the entire clock, the hour hand moves to the next large number. Practice doing this together.
Teach the children certain times. For example, hang up your model clock on the blackboard set to the time when lunch is served. Write "lunch" underneath it. Tell children to see if they can match the model clock to the regular clock hanging on the wall; when the hands match, it's lunch time. Repeat this exercise for other important times during the day.
