Brush the hair thoroughly. You want smooth, sleek hair, not knotted tangly hair. The less tangly the hair, the easier it will be to form the hair into a fish tail twist.
Separate the hair into two sections. Typically, a part down the middle of the entire head is standard. You can use the end of a comb to make this line, or just eyeball it.
Grab one of the sections and begin to twist the entire chunk to the right in a clockwise motion. You can use both hands to twist the hair because the other section can remain lying down.
Give the twisted section to your assistant and begin twisting the other section of hair in the same clockwise direction. Your assistant should hold the twisted piece at the end of the section to maintain the twist.
Grab the left section of twisted hair with your left hand and take the right section of hair from your assistant with your right hand. Wind the two sections around each other in a counterclockwise direction. Wind as tightly as possible.
Hold the ends with your non dominant hand and tightly wind a hair tie around the ends with your dominant hand. The clockwise twist of the individual hair pieces, coupled with the counterclockwise twist of the entire thing will hold the twist in place.
