Education Options for Troubled Youth

Educational options for troubled teens typically include sending the teen away from home so that he or she will be removed from negative influences and receive an education in a highly structured, yet unfamiliar environment. Most options have therapy sessions to help students work out any psychological issues that they may have, getting to the root of the teen's issues.
  1. Boarding Schools

    • Troubled teens are often sent to boarding schools, schools in which they live away from home and are educated. The best boarding schools for troubled teens, however, are schools that specialize in working with teens who are at risk of dropping out of school due to behavior issues, drug problems, or emotional problems. Boarding schools that can help these teens are often called therapeutic schools. These schools support students who need help controlling their anger, have trouble focusing on school work, are easily persuaded by peers, and are rebellious towards adults.

    Boot Camps

    • These camps seek to give students structure modeled after military training. For example, teens will exercise at a certain time, eat at a certain time, and keep their rooms clean like in boot camp. Boot camps, however, are usually run by the state and a judge must order a teen to go to boot camp. Therefore, the teen must have had trouble with the law. Vision Quest, however, allows families to apply for the program without a sentence from a judge.

    Wilderness Camps

    • Wilderness camps strive to teach children to respect themselves and others be developing a respect of nature. The teens participate in outdoor challenges that teach them positive character traits that they will need to their lives. The camps relocate teens into natural environments, away from their comfort zone, to help eliminate negative influences so that the students can focus on learning from the positive reinforcements in the wilderness camp. Teens take classes while at the camp to continue their education.
