The Kentucky Youth Development Centers help troubled youth complete schoolwork through a graduation track, GED track and a focus on vocational education in a secure environment. The centers provide a regular six-hour school day and allow for family visits. The centers also provide drug treatment and psychological counseling.
Boot camps are a common route for teens with behavioral problems in Kentucky. The Bluegrass ChaleNGe Academy (a National Guard camp) as well as the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice's Cadet Camp provide a more structured, military-style educational experience for troubled and at-risk youth.
Bluegrass ChaleNGe Academy is specifically aimed at at-risk youth, though youth must be drug-free and able to participate mentally and physically in the activities. This camp is free of charge for those accepted. The Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice's Cadet Camp is targeted specifically for young males who are already in the Kentucky juvenile justice system.
