Schools for Troubled Teens in Minnesota

Many parents who have found themselves with out of control or depressed teenagers have opted to send their children to schools for troubled teens, which are sometimes called "alternative schools." These special schools aim to help teens who are considered to be at-risk. Maybe they have been experimenting with drugs and alcohol, behaving violently or have exhibited harmful sexual behavior. Throughout the state of Minnesota there are a wide variety of schools that are available to help troubled teens.   1. Mille Lacs Academy

    • The Mille Lacs Academy is located near Lake Mille Lacs in Onamia, Minn., and specializes in helping teenage boys overcome harmful sexual behavior. The school offers full treatment programs that last from 30 days to 14 months. In addition to treatment, the campus offers year-round educational programs including general education classes such as English, literature, math and social studies. Additionally, teenage boys who attend Mille Lacs Academy will receive instruction about drug and alcohol prevention and sexuality to the level that is deemed age-appropriate.

    Westonka Area Learning Academy

    • The Westonka Area Learning Academy (WALA), which is about 30 minutes west of downtown Minneapolis, serves students who live in Minnetrista and surrounding areas. The program is Mound Westonka High School's Alternative Learning Center program, which focuses on at-risk youth. WALA provides a structured environment for troubled teens that encourages positive behavior and attendance through community service aimed at building self-respect.

    Gerard Academy

    • Located in the southeastern corner of Minnesota, Gerard Academy offers treatment for both boys and girls with emotional and behavioral disorders. Specifically teens who are depressed, suicidal, aggressive, anxious or performing self-mutilation may find the help they need at Gerard. Programs last from eight to ten months and your child's therapist works to help make you part of the process. A sister school to Mille Lacs Academy, Gerard offers the same general education classes and instruction about controlled substance prevention and sexuality.

    Arona Academy

    • Arona Academy specializes in helping troubled teens that are trying to overcome chemical dependency. The state-recognized, sober high school consists of students working a recovery program while receiving instruction to complete their high school diploma. The Academy has the same requirements and standards as the rest of the public schools in Minnesota. Arona Academy is one of approximately 10 recovery schools throughout Minnesota.
