Autism Schools in California

According to the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, autism is on the rise in the state of California. Autism is a developmental disability that effects an individual's social and emotional skills. This may manifest in communication and/or behavioral issues. Early diagnosis is key to succeeding in an effective treatment plan. Autistic children have been shown to respond well to individualized educational plans that include behavior modification and other similar techniques. These techniques are often employed by schools that focus solely on education for autistic children.
  1. A Better Chance School

    • The California Autism Foundation's A Better Chance (ABC) School provides instructional and developmental learning opportunities for children ages 6 through 22 with autism. This private educational institution utilizes current research and commonly accepted practices to aid in each individual child's development potential. Trained teachers and staff use Applied Behavior Analysis techniques such as Discrete Trial Training (DTT), incidental teaching and positive reinforcement. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) refers to a teaching method that rewards positive (or wanted) behaviors on the premise that the rewarded behavior will be repeated. For example, DTT includes taking a large task and breaking it into small steps. The child is rewarded for each step or trial that is done correctly, while a verbal prompt may be issued for undesired behaviors. The ABC School also places a strong emphasis on evaluation of the individual student to better improve progress. Students 16 years of age and older may enroll in the school's Workability vocational program to better integrate into the adult workforce.
