Massachusetts is home to many prestigious, private prep schools, with some dating to the 18th century, while others date to the mid-20th century. All have a reputation for academic excellence. Many organizations and publications rank these schools, according to specific criteria that can include student-teacher ration, cost, standardized test scores and admission of graduates to Ivy League colleges.

    • Founded in 1778, Phillips Academy has an endowment of close to $700 million and an enrollment of 1,100 in 2010. More than 80 percent of the school's faculty have advanced degrees. Average class size is 13, with a student-teacher ratio of 5 to 1. The school offers more than 300 courses. As of 2010, day tuition and expenses average $33,000 a year, while tuition and board averages $41,000.

    Buckingham Browne & Nichols School

    • Founded in 1974 when the Buckingham School and Browne and Nichols School merged, the Buckingham Browne & Nichols School, in Cambridge, is a co-educational day school for grades K through 12. Enrollment in 2010 was 987. The student to teacher ratio is 5.6 to 1, with 83% of faculty holding advanced degrees. Tuition costs, as of 2010, range from $24,700 to $34,330 a year, depending on grade level.

    Commonwealth School

    • Ranked the No. 1 private school in eastern Massachusetts in 2009 by Boston Magazine, Commonwealth School is a day school in the Back Bay section of Boston. Average enrollment is 150 in grades 9 through 12. Average class size is 12, with a 5 to 1 student-teacher ratio. Twenty eight of the 34 faculty members have a master's degree or higher. As of 2010, tuition costs plus fees average $34,000 a year.

    • Founded in 1797, Deerfield Academy, in western Massachusetts, is a co-educational independent school with both boarders and day students. Average enrollment is 600 in grades 9 through 12 and in a post-graduate, college preparatory class. Class size averages 12 students. Student to teacher ratio is 6 to 1, and nearly 80 percent of faculty have advanced degrees. The school offers 189 courses. As of 2010, tuition and fees average $43,000 a year.
