How to Set Goals in Elementary School

It is never too early to begin setting and working toward goals. Goal-setting skills help you to find what you want to accomplish in life and work toward that accomplishment. Setting goals with your elementary school student can be a helpful way to involve her in academic planning and gives her a degree of control and responsibility over her education. Creating elementary school goals is an excellent way to help motivate your young student.

Instructions

    • 1

Sit down with your child and ask her what she would like to accomplish this year at school. Goals do not always have to be academic; your student may want better grades, but she may also want to make more friends. Allowing the student some input on the goals helps make them personal and important.

    • 2

Ask your child where he would like to fall academically. Some students will want to excel beyond their peers, while others may be happy with improving their grades from last year. Work with your child to create positive goals.

    • 3

Assess whether the goals you have set are manageable and realistic. One of the most common mistakes people make when setting goals is choosing a goal that is beyond their immediate reach, which leads to discouragement. Break large goals into smaller, attainable goals and your child will find it easier to stay motivated.

    • 4

Refrain from awarding treats or other prizes to your child for meeting his or her goals. The point of personalized goal setting is learning to take responsibility for your life and finding satisfaction in accomplishing the goals you set out for yourself. If desired, a small reward for large goals may be appropriate.

    • 5

Stay positive and let your child know you are proud of her staying on top ofher goals. Encouragement from parents and a positive attitude can go a long way in keeping a child engaged.
