Home Activities for Gifted Boys That Are Bored in School

"A mind is a terrible thing to waste," was the campaign slogan for the United Negro College Fund. The slogan was talking about underprivileged black students. This slogan could also be used for under-stimulated young men, who are not being challenged to their full capacity. The boys need a plan to become motivated to perform and to reach for higher standards.
  1. Start an Enterprise

    • Chickens don't take much room and are easy to raise.

Money is a great motivator. Start your own home business. Make a list of things that interest you. Then brainstorm how those interests can turn into a money making project for you. If you like animals and have the room, order some baby chicks and raise them for their eggs. You can sell the eggs to neighbors and friends.

If you are a whiz at computers, start a computer tutorial company. You could set up computers and complete troubleshooting. You will need to put up flyers around town and make a marketing plan for your business. (see reference 2)

    Start a Collection

    • Study, organize, read about and cherish your collection.

"Collecting instills a sense of pride and ownership in young children. They want to protect and take care of their valuables," says Monica Cardoza, author of "Child's Play: Enriching Your Child's Interests, from Rocket Science to Rock Climbing, Stamp Collecting to Sculpture." The collection can be coins, stamps, football cards or mutant candy. Make sure you have a way to display your collection, whatever it is. You are learning math skills by organizing, classifying and ordering. You also will need to read informational books to find more data about your collection. Collecting gives you an objective while you are on vacation with your family. You might find a prized possession on your trip.

    Learn Something New

    • Try something new.

Keep interested in learning by trying something new. It could be learning how to play a new instrument, or making your own instrument. Perhaps you'd like to try out for the community theater's new production. You might want to learn about the national parks in our country. Send all 365 of the parks an email for more information. Your mailbox will be filled with maps, brochures and lots of information.

    Enter Contests

    • Someone is going to win, it could be you.

Contests are a great way to spark creativity and motivate learning. It is easy to find contests in your favorite magazine or on the Internet. You might find a building block design contest, art contest, poetry or joke contest. If you are interested in the topic or product, it will be easy to come up with an idea. Just think, you might win something too.
