Michigan is one of 18 states that has laws forcing public schools to provide home school students access to their sports programs. However, Michigan does not force any home school child to participate in any athletics or activities that are sponsored or held on public school property.
Home school curriculum in Michigan must contain English, mathematics, reading, science and social studies along with the United States Constitution test and Constitution of Michigan test. Home school children may enroll in non-essential classes such as band, art and physical education at the local public school if they choose. There is no specific requirement for physical education or athletics.
The state of Michigan has delegated the supervision and control of interscholastic sports to the local Boards of Education, Most of the boards have adopted policies as was suggested by the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). To learn more, contact MHSAA at www.mhsaa.com.
