Most home school teachers are not directly affiliated with a designated 501(c)3 nonprofit fiscal agent, which eliminates their eligibility for most private grants. Home schools are defined as a private school option by Texas law. A successful route to grant assistance, however, may be through grants for private-school scholarships. Two foundations Texas provide grants for private school.

Many Texas Community Foundations may be receptive to the idea of providing funds to hom-school teachers, but they will be limited in their ability to fund individual teachers not affiliated with a 501(c)3 nonprofit fiscal agent. Church communities, private nonprofit community centers and some libraries may be willing act as a fiscal agent for your grant ideas.

Due to the high competition for grant funding, homeschool teachers applying for support alone may face an insurmountable challenge. Home teaching in Texas, however, is proliferating, and homeschool families with a common project in mind, and a willing fiscal agent, could easily create a strong proposal that succeeds. A great place to start for ideas and possible resources is the Home School Foundation, based in Virginia.
