Individuals wishing to home school must register as a non-accredited private school by filling out and submitting a private school registration form. You only need to fill out this form one time--no renewal is necessary. You will need to inform the state of a change of address should one occur. There will be no confirmation, so make sure you copy the form for yourself.
Once you have submitted the form and created a lesson plan, you must formally withdraw your students from their public or private school to avoid your students being regarded as truant.
You must, according to Kansas Statute Annotated § 72-111(a)(2), instruct the students the same amount of time that the local public school teachers. This means that as of 2010 Kansas law, you must have 186 days, six hours per day, of "instruction." You can be creative--a day at the park, learning about ducks, is still a day of instruction.
The instructor must be, according to Kansas Statute Annotated § 72-1111(a)(2), "competent." There is no explanation of what competent means, and officials tend to take a common-sense approach as to whether the school is competently run.
You must have a scheduled plan and give tests periodically. This is very simple to do, just get a notebook and write down your objectives. Evaluate occasionally whether your students are learning by giving a test. The test can be oral, written or any method you like. You are not required to give or accept any type of standardized testing for your home-schooled students in the state of Kansas.
