Students applying for the Juris Doctor (J.D.) must submit an LSAT score, an application, and transcripts from previous academic institutions. All students applying for a J.D. at UCLA must have a baccalaureate from an accredited college or university. Students who studied at an institution that taught in a language other than English must provide a TOEFL score, unless English is the applicant's native tongue. Applicants must fill out an application form. Each applicant must write a personal statement that explains why he wishes to study law and how he would be an asset to UCLA and the field of law. Each applicant must provide two to three letters of recommendation. All applicants must pay an application fee.
Students applying for the Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree must provide a resume and history of academic work. Each applicant must write a personal statement explaining her reasons for wanting to study at UCLA, what will make her an asset to the school and what will make her an asset to the legal field. Applicants must provide transcripts from previous academic institutions, including class ranking if applicable. Applicants need two letters of recommendation. Applicants must submit an LSAT score. If the applicant's native tongue is not English, the applicant must submit a TOEFL score.
The Doctor of Judicial Science (S.J.D.) program at UCLA is very selective. Only two students are chosen each year. All applicants must have a J.D. degree and an LL.M. degree. In some cases, an applicant can apply if they have a J.D. degree and are currently studying towards an LL.M. degree. Applicants must submit an LSAT score and class ranking if applicable. Each applicant must submit a statement of research that explains in detail what he will research while at UCLA. A letter from a UCLA faculty member that explains the importance of the applicant's research is required.
