Language Development Activities for Home

Hearing your little one utter his first words is a memorable event. After he speaks his first word, encourage him to speak more by presenting him with activities that promote language development. There are a variety of ways that you can aid in your child's linguistic development at home --- even daily tasks can be turned into opportunities to teach language.
  1. Naming Foods

    • Turn something as simple as preparing food into an opportunity for promoting language development in your child. State the names of the different food items and cooking utensils that you are using. After stating the names of different items, ask your child to hand you a particular item. For instance, after showing your child what butter is, ask her to pass the butter to you.

    Read Aloud

    • Reading aloud offers a plethora of opportunities for language development. Select a book that has repetitive verses --- such as "The Gingerbread Man." As you read aloud, prompt your child to repeat the verses in the story. While reading, point out different items and name them --- point to the items again and ask your child to restate the words.

    Yes and No

    • Play a game of yes and no with your child. Ask your child a variety of questions that require a "yes" or "no" answer --- for instance: "Are you a boy?" "Are you __ years-old?" "Do you have ___ hair?" As you ask each question, your child should answer "yes" or "no." This activity will allow him to hear different words that pertain to things he is familiar with, increasing his vocabulary.

    Nature Walk

    • Not only is taking a walk physically beneficial to your child's development, it is also beneficial to his language development. Take a walk around your neighborhood, through a park or on a beach. As you walk, point out different items and state their names. As you progress through the walk, point to items that you have previously named and ask your child to name them.

    I Spy

    • The classic game of "I Spy" is an ideal game to play to promote language development. Pick a random item in the room you are in; something that isn't blatantly obvious, but something that isn't too difficult to notice. Say to your child, "I spy with my little eye, something that's ____." Fill in the blank with an attribute of the object --- its color, its shape or its size, for example. Your child looks around the room and tries to locate the item you are describing. If she doesn't correctly identify the item, repeat the phrase, inserting another attribute of the item. Continue playing until she finds the correct item.
