Railroad tycoon John Insley Blair, with the help of the Presbyterian church in Blairstown, New Jersey, established Blair Academy in 1848. The school began as a co-ed institution, but became boys-only in 1915. However, this was reversed again in 1970 and the school once again welcomes students of either gender. The sprawling campus is featured on the National Register of Historic Places. The campus educates around 450 students, nearly 340 of whom board at Blair. The small number of students means class sizes average 11 students per class. Boarding tuition for 2010 totaled $45,700. Thirty-three percent of students at Blair receive financial aid, averaging around $31,410.
Oakland College, Chamberlain-Hunt Academy's predecessor school, was founded in 1830 by the Presbytery of Mississippi. While this school closed in 1871, Chamberlain-Hunt rose from the foundations in 1877, opening its doors to male students in 1879. The school added a military component in 1895 and has remained a military boarding school since. Girls may enroll at the school, but boarding is only available to boys. The school emphasizes biblical learning and military discipline. The school received accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as well as the Association of Classical and Christian Schools. Tuition for one semester at CHA totaled $10,800 for spring 2011.
Presbyterian minister Reverend James A. Menaul founded a school for Spanish-speaking boys in northern New Mexico in 1896. The school ended its boarding program in the early 2000s, but the program began again in fall 2010. Around 225 to 250 students learn at Albuquerque's Menaul School. The school promotes diversity, with more than 60 percent of the students being of minority descent. Boarding at Menaul costs around $28,303 for one year's tuition as of 2010.
The Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Rabun Gap, Georgia, results from the merging of two Presbyterian schools. The Nacoochee Institute was established in 1903 by Presbyterian missionary Reverend Joel Wade, while Rabun Gap Industrial School started in 1905. Both schools met an untimely end due to fire, and the boards of the schools decided to rebuild and merge into one school in 1926. The school has seven residence halls, housing just over half the students of the school. As of 2009-2010, tuition for boarding students totaled $34,700.
While not specifically focused on Presbyterian teachings, boarding schools with a general Christian leaning offer religious foundation for all Christian sects. These schools also welcome non-Christians and non-religious students. Christian boarding schools can be found all over the country and in several different financial brackets. For instance, Woodberry Forest School in Woodberry Forest, Virginia, has a non-denominational Christian base for high school aged boys. Pomfret School in Pomfret, Connecticut, also caters to Christians but educates both males and females.
