Pro & Cons of Boarding Schools

The boarding school environment challenges a student to develop new social and academic skills while learning in a new environment. Whether the experience of a boarding school is beneficial or harmful depends on the student. The school offers opportunities for some students to learn away from negative influences. For others, the boarding school environment can appear to be a prison and result in the student shutting down to the learning process.
  1. Pro: Teacher-Student Relationship Growth

    • Unlike traditional schools where students and teachers are together for one short period per day, or at the most, an entire school day, boarding school fosters student-teacher relationships. At a boarding school, instructors are not only teachers in the classrooms, but also mentors out of the classroom. Having the same individual to relate to throughout the day offers consistency and relationship growth for the student.

    Pro: Structure

    • A boarding school provides a level of structure for the students. Rules are set forth not only for the classroom, but also for the school after class ends for the day. Students are responsible for their own behavior and ability to follow the rules. If the student fails to follow the guidelines set forth by the school, there are defined penalties. Students learn that there are consequences for their actions in every day life.

    Con: Isolation From Family

    • Boarding school students do not get everyday interaction with family. Instead, they interact with teachers and fellow students. This can result in the students relying more on peers and failing to develop a bond with some family members. Students can also develop a feeling that family members have "given up" on them and have passed them off to the staff of the boarding school.

    Con: Tolerance

    • Tolerance for unruly behavior is not permitted at boarding schools, according to edubook.com. According to the website, the tolerance for disruptive behavior is lower at a boarding school, and punishments for actions are more common. While this can possibly stem unruly behavior, it can also isolate the student from the class environment. If a student fails to adjust based on the punishments administered, she will be isolated from the class. This can result in a feeling of abandonment by both his family and the school. The student may then rebel further as she feels that she has no advocates.
