Show and tell is a way to teach conversational speaking to children. A child can present a speech during show and tell without prior preparation. Children will choose to show something that is their own, and this will provide them prior knowledge of the item. Because they will be talking about what they show, they will be able to create the speech on the spot. This exercise will encourage children to be informative and descriptive when speaking.
Children are known to mimic and imitate influential people around them. Create a game of imitation by having children imitate someone famous or someone that they know. Everyone playing the game must know the person they choose. Allow for acting out the person or character through verbal communication and body movements. This will help children to become descriptive with their speaking because they want to be understood correctly.
An original speech that will be easy for children to present is a persuasive speech. There are many things that children ask for, and by having them defend their argument on why they should have what they want, they are able to give a speech. This speech does not necessarily require preparedness, and a child can respond in speech form on the spot. The child can come up with reasons off the top of her head as to why they should be given something.
Sounds are an important aspect of speech and pronunciation. When children begin to speak, they learn sounds of animals. They are then able to identify animals by the sounds they make. To create a sound game, children will have to make a sound and then have it identified correctly. Ideas of sounds can be written on paper and selected randomly by children. Children will continue to make the sound, or make additional sounds until it is correctly identified.
