Speech and Language Goals in Preschool

Functional goals in preschool are goals that include what the teachers want the child to demonstrate, paired with a criteria for the actions, as well as the conditions that the child can operate under. It is important to remember that goals for young children should not be universal; each child is different and may require personalized goals.
  1. Communication

    • Interaction with other students is very important in preschool. A reasonable goal to set for most preschoolers is for them to exercise manners while interacting, such as taking turns with a toy, or asking kindly for it. Encourage children to express themselves when they are hungry or need to use the bathroom.

    Speaking

    • Another reasonable goal for preschoolers is to make sure that they have a basic understanding of speech. Making sure that they understand the difference between a statement and a question is very important. Encourage complete sentences in speech. Teach students that waiting for an answer after asking a question is a very important part of polite speech.

    Expression and Response

    • Make sure the students use what they learn about speech to express themselves. Let the children listen to stories that are read to them, and ask them questions about the material. Show them pictures and ask questions about what they see. Familiarize the children with adjectives to describe things they encounter. Listen to their responses and use their feedback as a guideline for areas they need to improve. Encourage them to ask questions to learn more about something they are curious about.

    Make It More Than Talking

    • Familiarize the children with the shapes of the alphabet. Introduce them to the sounds that the letters make and work towards them recognizing a letter by its sound alone. Make sure the students know that writing is an important part of communication.

    Analyze the Child's Needs

    • Every child is different, so to create functional goals that work, you need to determine what each child needs. If possible, incorporate the needs of the children into one system, so that one child does not feel isolated in her learning. At the same time, be careful not to hold the more advanced students back.
