Multicultural Children's Games

In a diverse world, it is important for children to be aware of the differences among people. Whether you are helping students get to know one another in the beginning of the school year or incorporating this topic into a particular curriculum, you can use games on multiculturalism to stimulate and enhance student learning.
  1. Hello in Different Languages

    • Ask students how many languages they think they know how to say "hello" in. Write the average number that they guess on the board. Now, ask the students how to say "hello" in other languages. When someone says an answer, ensure she repeats it loudly and clearly for the rest of the class to hear. Write the responses next to the number, and see how close the class gets to reaching that goal.

    Name Story Game

    • Bring students to the computer lab, and instruct them to research the origin and meaning of their names. Once they have written down that information, ask them to share what they have learned with the rest of the class. They should also be prepared to talk about the origin of their name, and say if it is related to their nationality and why that particular name was chosen for them.

    Games From Other Countries

    • Ask students to bring in a game from their country of origin or to research one from the Thunder Bay Multicultural Association. They might select the game "Third Player Chase," which comes from Austria or "12 Sticks on a Board," which comes from Finland. After they have read the rules, have a few students give a brief presentation on what they learned and teach the rest of the class how to play the game they researched.

    Cultural Intelligence Tests

    • Teach students how intelligence is often defined differently in various places. They should visit the Cultural Bias in Intelligence Testing website that is part of Wilderdom. Ask them to read the information provided and look at the various test questions and formats. After they have completed the assignment, ask them what they have learned from reading the page. Challenge them to come up with an intelligence test that is free of bias.
