Anthropology Games

In high school or college, students might take a course in anthropology. The material can certainly be a bit dense at times. However, introduce some games into your curriculum to keep students interested in the subject matter, while they are simultaneously absorbing the information.
  1. Trivia

    • One option is to host a trivia event in the classroom. You could set the questions up Jeopardy style or simply divide the class into a number of teams. Potential questions that you could ask include "What is the correct name for a scientist who studies the human skeleton?" and "Which of the following dating methods would you most likely use to determine the age of human remains found in the indigenous volcanic rock?"

    Role Playing

    • Divide students into small groups and have them create the scenery for a specific time period or location. For example, they might construct an igloo out of sugar cubes or a model of a wigwam out of paper. They should also create paper characters that correspond to the setting. Ask students to come up to the front of the class, where they will put on a brief skit illustrating either a particular custom or daily life in the locale.

    Archaeological Dig

    • Set up a mock archaeological dig in the classroom. For example, you might bury mock artifacts from a particular time period in a sand box in the room or in the schoolyard. Have students collect these artifacts and then consult their books to figure out specific questions about the community. For example, you might ask them to identify what religious practices the people observed or what types of food they ate based on the artifacts.

    Online Games

    • Bring the students in your class to a computer lab, so that they can play some anthropology games online. For example, they could visit Fun Trivia, where they will find games specific to certain disciplines, such as forensic anthropology. You could also allow them to create their own online quizzes, where they send the link to other students in the class. Such an activity focuses on their knowledge of anthropology, but also strengthens writing skills.
