Adverb Games

Adverbs are words that modify adjectives, verbs, other adverbs or phrases. These modifications can include describing how or how much an adjective is (decidedly different), and an adverbial phrase can detail where or when an action occurred (hurriedly finished on time). Because of these different uses, the concept of adverbs can be quite tricky to master for elementary and middle school students. There are a number of engaging activities and games that you can play with your students to help them learn what adverbs are and how they work.
  1. Adverb Charades

    • Have your students write out a several sentences of activities they do every day during school. Give examples like, "I eat lunch at noon." and "I study for my test." Have your volunteer come to the front of your class and read their sentences. As the students read each one aloud, ask if they could act out that sentence with an adverb inserted into it. "Can you eat your lunch sneakily? How about hungrily?" As each student acts out the sentence, the class becomes more familiar with what an adverb is.

    Adverb or Adjective?

    • Compile a list of adjectives and adverbs. Make many of them from the same root word, such as "hungry" and "hungrily". Review with your students the difference between an adverb and an adjective, and begin to read off your list, one word at a time, asking students to raise their hand and answer if the word is an adverb or an adjective. Don't be afraid to throw in a verb or a noun occasionally to keep your students on their toes.

    Adverb Pictionary

    • Have your students break into small groups of 4 to 6. From those groups, the students will break into two teams. Students take turns thinking up an adverb, then drawing it on a chalkboard or piece of paper, as other students guess at which adverb it may be. Whichever team guesses the adverb correctly gets a point. The first team to 5 points wins.

    Find The Adverb

    • On the chalkboard or a piece of paper, write out a very long, run-on sentence, with several different nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns and at least one adverb. One at a time, have students raise their hand and see if they can spot the adverb.
