Number Games Using Algebra

Playing number games is one way to get students excited about math. Not only are math number games entertaining, but they also teach students the basic skills they will need to become successful math students. Teach your students number games they can play independently or with a friend, so they can practice their math skills anytime or anywhere.
  1. Algebra Jeopardy

    • Play Algebra Jeopardy to give your students extra practice on how to solve basic equations, two-step equations, mixed equations and equations with variables on both sides. Students choose from one of the four categories, then try to correctly solve the algebraic equation. The higher the point value for the question, the more difficult the question is. This game can be played independently or with a partner, or you can make this game a team activity that involves all of the students in your class.

    Fraction Four

    • Work on basic fraction skills, such as reducing fractions, adding or subtracting fractions, converting mixed fractions or multiplying and dividing fractions, by playing Fraction Four. In this game, a player gets a turn to answer a question about fractions. If he gets the answer correct, he gets to mark a space in a column on grid paper. If he gets the answer incorrect his partner gets a chance to answer the question. Whoever gets the question correct gets to mark a space on the grid paper. The object is to be the first to mark four spaces in a row on the grid paper.

    Planet Hop

    • Have the students practice locating objects on a grid using coordinates by playing Planet Hop. In this game, they must correctly identify the coordinates of a given object. After locating several objects in a straight line, they then must correctly calculate the slope of the line as well. In some cases give the students the coordinates of an object that they must locate on the grid, while in other cases show them an object's location, but they must enter its coordinates correctly.

    Algebra Planet Blaster

    • Practice solving algebraic equations by having students identify the missing variable in Algebra Planet Blaster. If they correctly choose the value of the variable, they get to shoot down a planet with the corresponding value assigned to it. For example, a student may have an algebraic expression such as "14 - X = 37" and he has to find the value of "X." Meanwhile, there is a planet with a number on it that matches the answer to the problem. This is a single-person game, but could be played with a partner.
