Understanding Algebra 2

Algebra II is an important dividing line in math education. An strong grasp of these skills are crucial for success in higher-level classes like calculus. The U.S. Department of Education released a report called "Foundations For Success: Final Report of the National Mathematics advisory Council" in 2008. The report stated that students who complete Algebra II are more likely to go to college. They also see an increase in their earning potential. Increases in math-intensive jobs in sectors like engineering and information technology favor those who are prepared.
  1. Content

    • The structure of math education and even the names of classes vary from state to state, town to town. However, in speaking about Algebra II, certain skill are essential. Students will be expected to understand linear equations with which map out straight lines and quadratic equations which map out curved lines called parabolas. Students will have to know how to solve these equations on their own and use them as functions to solve real world problems such as maximizing the area of a fence with a fixed perimeter.

Students will also have to know how to identify, factor and solve various kinds of polynomial and rational functions. The will also learn about complex numbers, the fundamental theorem of algebra and the binomial theorem. Finally they will need to know about mathematical induction, combinations and permutations, as well as geometric and infinite series.

    Prerequisite Knowledge

    • A student must fully understand several topics to be successful in Algebra II. They must be able to manipulate whole numbers (including addition, subtraction) as well as fractions. They should be able to move between fractions and decimals easily and compare them and manipulate them in the same manner as whole numbers. Also, they should have a firm understanding of proportion and ratio.

In terms of geometric knowledge, students will have to identify standard geometric shapes, and solve for perimeter and area of triangles, and quadrilaterals. Students should also be able to identify standard three-dimensional shapes and solve for surface area and volume. Finally they must understand the concept of similar triangle and how they relate to the slope of a line.

    Strategies for Parents

    • Algebra II is an important class for students. Parents naturally will want to ensure success. They would do well to make sure they have a realistic view of their children's proficiency level. They have the best view because they have seen their children's marked tests and homework over time and can see general patterns of their child's strength's and difficulties. Once these observation have been made they can be shared with the teacher and a strategy can be developed. This can be as simple as extra homework problems or review work over the summer to keep skills from becoming rusty.
