How to Search for Houses by a School

When you have a child or children, one of your primary concerns is a quality education. When moving to a new town, your search for a house may be centered around location and types of schools in the area. Ask local residents for feedback and also search for reviews online to read about each school. In addition, you may choose to visit various school websites for more detailed information before beginning your search for your new home.

Search the name of your city and state on websites such as "SchoolDigger," "greatschools" and "Private School Review." Each site may offer a slightly different search procedure, such as clicking on the state, then entering the city, or typing the city and state into a search field. Search results will consist of a list of schools in the searched city. Click on a particular school and locate the link to a realtor site on the resulting page, which will list houses for sale in the general area near the school. Detailed home listings will appear, which often include a photograph, price and vicinity. More details regarding the listed property will appear by clicking on the listing.

Search such sites as "Realtor.com," "Home Finder" or "Rentals.com." Type the name of your city and state in the search fields provided to receive real estate listings in the area. Click on a particular house to view the details. From the details screen, peruse the page to locate the link to local schools. After choosing the link to neighborhood schools, a list of schools will appear and may give such information as distance from the house, school rating, grades taught at each school and teacher/student ratio.

Schedule an appointment with a reputable realtor in the area. If she has been in the area for a while, she should be able to assist you in locating schools, giving feedback as to the types of schools, whether public or private, high school or middle school, and providing you with school board contact information in the event you require further information. She may not, however, be allowed to give her opinion of the school due to fair housing laws. Of course, her tour of the schools will not be complete until she shows you nearby houses for sale or rent. If you prefer one-on-one conversation and immediate answers to your questions, this may be the way to go.
