How to Search for Scholarships

Searches for scholarships to pay for college is an easy task, but requires persistence. You need to treat your search for scholarships as a part-time job throughout your time in school. Scholarships are offered by different organizations year-round so you have to be looking for them year-round. Don't assume you can apply for a few in the fall and you'll be set. Scholarship notices can be found in a variety of places including newspapers, newsletters, community bulletin boards and the Internet.

Talk to your school counselor. If you are a high school student, the best place to start looking for scholarships is with your school's guidance counselor. Local companies and organizations that offer scholarships often send a copy of their application to the local high schools. If you are in college already, you should go to your university's student financial aid office. It should have a list of scholarships available to students within the university. You should also check your specific college's main office for scholarships offered to students within your major (for example, The College of Arts might have its own scholarship for Art majors).

Register with a free online search engine. The most popular is FastWeb, but there are a variety of websites that will search the Internet for you. There are plenty of reliable scholarship search sites that offer their service for free so do not pay for an online scholarship search. There are several scholarship scams on the Internet. Many of these scams will have you pay for a search, and then the scholarships they "find" for you are old, outdated, or the information isn't complete and accurate.

Read your local paper. Many local organizations will advertise their upcoming scholarship in the newspaper. You'll usually find these notices under local events or sometimes in the classified section.

Check with any organization you belong to (like 4-H) see if they offer scholarships to their members. Also be sure to check with organizations your parents belong to, and the companies your parents work for. Many companies offer scholarships to the children of their employees, but sometimes you have to be studying to go into that industry.
