How to Learn Your ABC Games

The alphabet is a critical part of young curriculum. Being able to recognize and say the names of letters and their sounds is the foundation for strong language development, and gives your child a solid start to her education. Alongside traditional ways of learning the alphabet, such as alphabet songs, ABC games can also boost learning.

Instructions

    • 1

Play online games with your child. Games such as the Fisherprice ABC game require your child only to press a keyboard key, and use bright, attention-grabbing colors, which makes them very child friendly, and fun.

    • 2

Use a set of alphabet blocks. These can be soft or hard, depending on your child's age, and there is a letter on each cube. Have races to find letters, and line them in alphabetical order. You could also write words, and make alphabet towers.

    • 3

Purchase some stamps with alphabet letters on them. Dip them in paint and use a different color for each letter until you have an alphabet banner. Let your child decorate around the banner, and display it somewhere as a reminder of the alphabet.

    • 4

Do an alphabet scavenger hunt. Ask your child to go and find something beginning with "A," such as an apple. Continue through the alphabet until you get to the end.

    • 5

Make biscuits or cookies together. Shape the biscuits into letters. Doing this in alphabetical order will help your child to memorize the order.

    • 6

Color pictures of the letters in a corresponding color. For example, you could color "G" in green, and "P" in purple. This will help the child to learn the shapes of the letters, as well as linking words and colors, and learning their alphabet. You can do a similar activity on walks, pointing to "S" for sky, or "D" for dog.
