Creative Classroom Rules

Creative classroom rules can enhance the experience of your students. Make up unique classroom rules such as "Never say the word can't" and help endorse your students self-esteem and creativity. You can create rules to motivate students to participate more actively in class discussion or complete homework. Decide on your goals for your classroom before creating the rules to help you craft an appropriate list of rules for your students.
  1. No Negative Phrases

    • Boost your students self-respect and respect for their peers by doing away with all negative phrasing. Make a rule stating that no student is allowed to make a negative comment within the classroom concerning personal performance or that of other students. This can help eliminate animosity between peers and aid students' self-esteem as they are forbidden to speak negatively about themselves but instead are motivated to remain positive and try harder on future assignments.

    Music of the Day

    • Start the day off with music. Boost students' creative thinking and pique interest by playing a song on an instrument or a recording. Incorporate the song into your teaching by choosing one that in some way relates to your lessons for the day. Choose from a wide variety of music so that you can cover all students' musical taste and your own. Consider asking students to write down what they think the song has in common with the lesson plan for extra credit points.

    Varied Seating

    • Everyone makes friends in classes and most students enjoy sitting with their friends, but this can potentially cause classroom disruption or may leave some students out as not all students are outgoing. Ask each student to sit in a different seat every day. This will allow students to sit near different people and interact with everyone in the classroom. Switching up seating will also ensure that you remember every student's name which can make them feel more important and valued and not just a specific seat location.

    Daily Participation Points

    • Require each student to participate in class every day. This can range from asking a question relating to classroom assignments or joining discussions and will ensure that students volunteer for reading aloud in class or answering questions that you pose. Keep students engaged by requiring all students to participate for points; they will be more likely to pay attention to classroom discussion because they will want to receive their daily points.
