The objective for your lesson would be for students to represent and compare the tortoise and the hare using music. Begin the lesson by reading the fable to students and then have a discussion about the differences in each animal. You may want to create a Venn Diagram to do this. Have students represent each animal with different instruments, tempos, songs or by using a ready-made product with the story and music included.
When teaching students about the tortoise and the hare, have them play musical instruments to represent each animal. For example, a flute could represent the hare and a tuba could represent the tortoise. You could also have students use the same instruments, but play them at different tempos to represent each animal. Students representing the hare would play their instruments at a faster tempo while students representing the tortoise would play a slower tempo.
Have your students choose songs to represent each animal. They could determine the perfect song for each animal by either the lyrics or the tempo of the music. The lyrics could represent the speeds of the animals, slow and fast, or represent the moral of the story of slow and steady wins the race.
If you are short on time or would like to have a product that would be easy to use for a substitute teacher, use a ready-made product such as a CD that has the fable retold with music.
