Create a test you can break up into different categories, such as adjectives, adverbs, capitalization and punctuation, noun and verb agreement, paragraph structure and sentence structure. Include several questions from each category.
Create a new blank document using Microsoft Word. Write questions for each category using a variety of forms, such as multiple choice, true or false, fill-in-the-blank and matching. Include a question that requires a written response. It doesn't have to be lengthy, a paragraph or two will suffice. Save the document and name it "Grammar Test."
Give the test to your students. Make sure they have plenty of time to complete it, but not more than one class period. Verify that students are working independently. As soon as a student completes her test, pick it up and continue monitoring the class until all learners have finished the test.
Grade the assessment. Depending on your students' grade and the appropriate level of knowledge, you can determine if your students are on track, or behind and in need of refresher mini-lessons. Give the assessment back to the students so they will know what they need to work on. Continue to address learners' areas of weakness with grammar lessons throughout the year.
