How to Motivate Students for High School Classroom Management

Motivating high-school students to self-manage in a classroom environment is essential for academic success. The trick to inspiring students to excel and self-manage means learning the balance between enthusiasm and control. According to Michael Linsin, in his Smart Classroom Management article, "How To Motivate Students Without Losing Control Of Your Class," enthusiasm and calm are the yin and yang of classroom management. Once these measures are employed and absorbed by students, classroom management will manage itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Encourage enthusiasm at the right times. Get passionate when teaching lessons and modeling examples for students. Use your passion and examples to launch the student's passion. Make it the goal of enthusiasm to display the value of the lesson. Ask students to share enthusiasm by celebrating correct answers to questions and encouraging them to offer their own examples pertinent to the lesson.

    • 2

Give students responsibility. Group pairs - or groups - of students together to complete tasks. Provide a goal and time limit to reach that goal on all assignments. Have students share their work by reading aloud or presenting group work to the class. Assigning presentation requirements to students helps keep them in line - knowing their work and performance will be judged by the rest of the class.

    • 3

Encourage calm and quiet at the right times. Make it clear that talking at inappropriate times or misbehaving during class transitions, group procedures or independent work will not be tolerated. Hold the entire class accountable for the calm and quiet of the class. If one student misbehaves, for example, make the entire class suffer the consequence - a reduced grade on an assignment, for example. Make students hold themselves and fellow classmates accountable for their actions by holding true to your yin and yang standards.

    • 4

Stay consistent with your teaching methods and advocating of self-management. Avoid doing the opposite of what you preach - becoming loud when you demand quiet, for example -- to retain the respect of students and control of your classroom.
