How to Create an Outline for Project Based Instruction in High School

Project-based instruction is an instructional model rooted in constructivism educational theory. In project-based instruction, students do not just do projects as part of a curriculum; rather, the projects are the curriculum. Project-based instruction begins with an open-ended question, problem or issue with real-world application and requires students to learn new skills in order to address the question or problem. Problem-based instruction is student centered and involves issues that are meaningful and motivating to students. Achieving curriculum goals becomes a necessary part of completing the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Define the learning goals that the project will address. These should be tied to state curriculum standards.

    • 2

Define the issue or problem that the project will address. This step is best done in collaboration, with the teacher and students working together to choose a specific problem.

    • 3

Choose project goals. These should include both the desired outcome of the project and the more detailed criteria that the project must include. These criteria should be tied to curriculum goals and standards.

    • 4

Estimate time frames for completion of sections of the project. This step can be done in collaboration between teacher and students. Giving students specific due dates for sections of the project will help avoid spending too much time on a single project.

    • 5

Outline a plan for assessment of the project. Assessment should occur both during the project and after the project is completed.
