How to Grade a Group-Referenced Test

Group-referenced tests, otherwise known as norm-referenced or standardized tests, are tests that are given to a specific group of students, most commonly students of the same grade or age. Group-referenced tests are given to compare students in a specific sub-group to see how well individual students compare to their peers. Group-referenced tests have increased importance in education today, as they are one of the defining elements of a school or district meeting Annual Yearly Progress or AYP. One of the most common examples of a group-referenced test is the SAT.

Instructions

    • 1

Score your students' tests as you would any other assignment, determining the number of points they earned out of the total possible.

    • 2

Compare the scores of your students to those of all other students who took the test in the same sub-group.

    • 3

Rank your students, by percentage, in comparison to all other students who took the test. For example, if 100 students took the test and one of your students scored higher than 93 other students, then he would be ranked in the 93rd percentile.
