How to Teach Children How to Use an FQR Sheet

Fact, question and response sheets help students improve reading comprehension and develop their analytical writing skills. When completing an FQR sheet, students write facts mentioned in the text in a box labeled "facts." This helps students identify the main theme of the passage. Any questions students have concerning the passage go in the box labeled "questions." This enhances a student's critical thinking skills. Finally, any personal feelings a student has about the text are written in the box labeled "response." This enhances the student's critical thinking abilities.

Instructions

    • 1

Distribute the passage that the children will read from along with the FQR sheet.

    • 2

Hand out three pads of different-colored sticky notes. Explain to the students that one color will be for facts, another color will be for questions and the final color will be for responses.

    • 3

Explain to the children that any material presented in the passage as truth, law or evidence should be considered a fact and written on the sticky note pads for fact along with the page number. Tell the children that any confusing text they encounter or ideas presented in the text on which they need clarification to better comprehend the passage should be written on the questions sticky notes along with the page number of the text in question. Inform the children that any personal feelings they have about the passage should be written on the response sticky notes.

    • 4

Have the students transfer the facts, questions and responses they wrote from the sticky notes to the appropriate fields on the FQR sheet. Discuss the passage and FQR results with the class.
