How to Make Splash Words for a Bulletin Board

Word Splash is a means of both introducing new unit vocabulary and engaging students' interest in the content matter. The teacher displays new words related to the study and then encourages students to manipulate the words by grouping them, predicting their meanings or otherwise explore the terms. The rationale is that students will be motivated to learn more about the subject because the words themselves pique interest in the topic. You can present splash words in a variety of ways, including mounting them on a bulletin board visible as students enter the classroom.

Instructions

  1. Shaped Splashes

    • 1

Trace a shape that relates to the study unit's theme onto cardstock or construction paper. For example, cut Conestoga wagons for a unit about westward expansion or raindrops or clouds for a water cycle study.

    • 2

Print the unit vocabulary on the shapes. Limit the splash set to 10 words at a time, if possible.

    • 3

Cut out the shapes. Mount them flush on the bulletin board or give the display depth with foam mounting squares or paper "springs" to make the word shapes pop out from the surface.

    Computerized Splashes

    • 4

Open a word-processing or desktop publishing document on your computer.

    • 5

Type the vocabulary words into "text art" shapes, filling open-font letters with color gradients, patterns or other embellishments.

    • 6

Print the words onto cardstock and cut them out. Mount them on coordinating cardstock, construction paper, scrapbooking paper or wallpaper with double-sided tape or glue.
